Nine WASC Members Hike
Jockey Hollow

Sept. 23, 2007

“Oh, what a beautiful morning, oh, what a beautiful day” and WASC was there. With Mary Ellen Kazar as leader, nine members of WASC invaded Jockey Hollow.
At the start, everyone was on time! The hikers included Mary Ellen Kazar, Maryjean Butler, Tony Nicoli, Daryl & Larry Thomas, Ellen Earl, Rob Anderson, Ruth DeSousa, and me.
After a brief stop at the Visitors’ Center, we headed out along the 6˝ mile long Grand Loop Trail. Our first stop was at the Tempe Wick House where an appropriately costumed woman gave us a history lesson (laying to rest the legend of the horse hidden in the attic?) not only of the area, but also of Sandy Hook’s Fort Hancock. In addition, we viewed the soldiers’ huts as we continued along the trail.
The day was perfect for hiking! The temperature was not quite crisp but the trees kept us comfortable. The blue sky was cloudless with a slight breeze that was just right for the first day of fall.
This hike was the fourth in a series put together by Mary Ellen. (She has one more planned for Saturday, November 3 and Joe Tag has his annual hike on Sunday, October 14. Be there!) Hopefully Mary Ellen will make her hiking series another annual event for WASC. Those of us who have participated have enjoyed them immensely.
   Thank you Mary Ellen!
